After-effects

Meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia can cause many different after-effects because of damage to different parts of the body.  Your after-effects may get better after a few weeks or they may be permanent.  Whatever your after-effect, help is available from your GP, hospital and us.

After-effects and complications can happen with any type of meningitis but are more common after bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia.

Most after-effects of meningitis usually happen because areas of the brain have been damaged.  Some of these after-effects can be:

  • Hearing loss
  • Sight problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Learning and behavioural difficulties
  • Memory loss
  • Headaches
  • Depression

Most after-effects of septicaemia usually happen because of damage to the blood vessels. Some of these can be:

  • Skin damage/scarring
  • Loss of limbs
  • Damage to organs, such as the kidneys
