What is Meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium known as meningococcus. These bacteria are the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and can affect all ages. However, only rarely do the bacteria overcome the body's defences and cause disease. When people talk generally about meningitis they are in fact often referring to meningococcal disease (meningitis and/or septicaemia). The most at risk group are children under the age of 5 and particularly babies under 1 year, the second at risk group are teenagers and young adults.
